What is Soil?

Soil isn’t just “dirt.” It’s a living, breathing ecosystem that supports plant life, filters water, cycles nutrients, and even helps regulate the climate. For lawn care the quality of soil (its structure, pH, nutrient levels, etc.) is key to growing healthy lawns.
It’s made up of:
Minerals – tiny bits of rock that have broken down over time
Organic matter – decomposed plants and animals (this is where nutrients come from).
Water – helps carry nutrients to plant roots.
Air – roots need oxygen too, and so do the microbes living in soil.
Living organisms – bacteria, fungi, worms, insects… all doing their part to break things down and cycle nutrients.
Has structure – layers (like topsoil, subsoil, etc.), texture, and the ability to retain nutrients and moisture.
Supports plant growth – it’s what your grass and plants need to thrive.
Part of an ecosystem – it cycles nutrients, stores carbon, filters water, and supports biodiversity.
